A Poem about touch

THE GAZE

You caught my stare
Or was it a glare
I felt a buzz
Or maybe a stir
When you touched my hand
With the tips of your fingers
It was like an electric shock
I pulled my hand away
In that moment I knew
I knew it would be you

Coronation Chicken

I usually make leftover roast chicken into a pesto with pasta dish. Today I decided to Google a recipe for Coronation chicken and mixed the ingredients from two recipes.
The result was:-

Lemonia Greek restaurant in Primrose Hill, London, England

We went on a Sunday lunchtime to celebrate a family birthday. The atmosphere was lovely as the restaurant was full. The service was attentive. The starters were on the small side. The mains and dessert were a good size and the wine list was good too. The bill was rather high but then it's what I call a restaurant in a "Happening Place".

Have you tried Zizzi in London?

I went to Zizzi in Charlotte Street in central London.

I had a lovely chilled beer and a spaghetti bolognese. Wasn't impressed by the quality of the meat. Reminded me of school mince in the fifties! Nice outside seating and staff were attentive.  Have you had a better experience?

A refreshing drink for the heatwave

My sister-in-law lives in Turkey and sent this to my husband to help him lose weight.  I drank some one day and found it so refreshing.  I have lost a few pounds but wouldn't put it down to the drink.

You need a jug with a lid
A piece of ginger, peeled and grated
A few mint leaves, washed and taken off the stalk
Slices of lemon
Mineral water

Put the ginger, mint and lemon in the jug and top up with water.  Keep in the fridge.  You can top it up with water no more than twice.  It is supposed to help remove stomach fat, but I just like it as a refreshing summer drink.

More eggy breakfasts for light eaters

Boil a free range egg in a pan of boiling water for about 4 minutes. Plunge into cold water so you can remove the shell. Simply put in a cup, chop with a spoon and season with salt and pepper. If it happens to be hard boiled, then a knob of butter could be added or a cholesterol lowering spread if you have high cholesterol (advice needed from a medical professional).

Fed up of Cauliflower Cheese?

Fancy a change?  Something a bit more spicy?
Why not fry some cauliflower florets in olive oil with cumin seeds, a dash of curry powder and, of course, salt and pepper?

The Spa at Bluestone in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

“Beautiful lighting and aroma”
We went to Bluestone with a romance package which included 2 hours in the spa with a massage, as I understood it. No mention was made of the massage and I wasn’t in the mood to complain. Was just happy to chill out having recently lost my mum. We arrived during Gale Barney, so the weather was windy and non-stop rain. After 3 days struggling to do anything with the heavy rain, we decided to visit the spa taking our umbrellas.

We got into our dressing gowns which were provided. I found the changing room to be well equipped with hairdryers and towels but the room was cold. We did the rounds of the 2 different types of sauna, 5 minutes in each room was enough with our high blood pressure (under control with medication), the salt room which I loved but my husband couldn’t see the point of it, then 2 steam rooms, one herbal. All rooms had pretty sparkly lights in the ceiling and crystals everywhere, smellie candles, power showers with 6 jets, and the ice room….I was scared of the ice room but it was lovely after the sauna…..so after 30 minutes we’d had enough and went to the coffee shop and saw people outside in the jacuzzi under the rain. We decided to join them and walked along the non slip mat in the rain and got in just as the bubbles started. How invigorating it was. 35c. It’s a shame they don’t have an indoor jacuzzi.

We had a hot shower and capuccino after that and were done for the day.

On the second day we braved the heavy rain to visit Narpeth for supplies.  A great place for foodies.
We had a two storey lodge with the lounge upstairs.  This was the view of the bungalow opposite us.

Mother's Day

In the UK Mother’s Day was on 11th March.  I received beautiful flowers from my son and he took me to a South Indian restaurant in London for an unusual meal.
It was also on the 11th March in Guernsey, Ireland, Jersey and Nigeria.  The United States and Australia don’t celebrate it until 13th May this year.  France and Sweden will celebrate on the 27th May this year.

Comfort foods when you have a bad cold

Is there a good cold?

Chicken noodle soup with loads of lemon juice and a bit of chicken on the bone to enrich the stock.
Faggots with mashed potatoes
Steak and kidney pudding
Baxters French onion soup and Heinz tomato.
I sometimes resort to a pot noodle!

Madhur Jaffrey Rogan Josh

Although plenty of rogan josh sauces are available in jars, when you have the time, cooking rogan josh from scratch to Madhur Jaffery's recipe has the real flavour.  Yesterday was the day I found the time.

Vitamins for Seniors

There is such a choice of vitamins available.

Only last week a friend recommended my husband takes Rhodiola rosea together with Ashwagandha Maximum Strength.  They are supposed to give him energy.  So far, he feels more sleepy.  I took one Rhodiola but felt too lively that day.  It is not for me.

I just found a dusty looking bottle on my bedside table.  It's Ubiquinol CoQ10.  I don't remember what I was taking it for, so will need to google it as they were not cheap and are still in date.  Then there is the Glucosamine Hydrochloride plus Osteocare liquid for my joints and bones, having broken three of them.  I also take Evening Primrose Oil, Menopace multivitamins and have 5HTP to help with serotonin levels.  I live in the UK in a flat with no outside access, so my doctor recommended I take high dose Vitamin D.  Do we really need all this stuff?  I don't take them all every day as it would be just TOO much.  I almost forgot, I now have gone back to Cod Liver Oil capules for Vitamin D!  If I feel a cold coming on, I take Boots First Defence followed by a soluble Vitamin C tablet with Propolis royal jelly thrown in for good measure.

I eat a varied diet and although I don't like most fruit I love lemons and limes and have at least one a day.

That Drink Thing!!!

I think my relationship with alcohol has a lot to do with stress.  Yesterday I had an hour's meeting with a solicitor and decided to eat lunch time and have a glass or more of wine, followed by a nap.  I hadn't had much sleep the night before (worrying about the solicitor thing) and slept like a log last night.  I think the alcohol helped.

Today I have been sipping water and drank Earl Grey.  I shall try to avoid wine o'clock, or at least delay it an hour.  I am trying!!!

Morphy Richards Soup Maker

IMG_0913

I was given one for Christmas and decided to try it out with some leftover vegetables yesterday.  You can get similar results with a saucepan and hand whisk but I found the end result so much more tasty in the soup maker.  Maybe it retains all the vitamins?  The dried herbs totally melted.

REVIEW Ask Italian Restaurant in Islington, London, England

I was tired after wandering around the Country Living Fair in the Business Design building and not impressed by the food on offer and the lack of comfortable seating so on my way out I saw the side door into Ask and had a lovely glass of Merlot and a Fettucini bolognese.  I couldn't finish it as the portion was too large for me but great for people with a bigger appetite.

The service was good and I was in an area where the staff took their breaks and they seemed to eat the same as the customers which is good to know.  I used to work in a steak restaurant and was told to open a can of baked beans for my break on a Saturday night.

Getting on the Wagon

Well, I haven't managed to get off the alcoholic merry-go-round as yet but I have cut the vodka down to one a night.  Maybe today will be the day I skip it altogether.  Having said that, I am thirsty and fancy something with ice.  Must look at the non-alcoholic gin available on Amazon.  Only thing is I don't drink gin.  I prefer vodka.

I have been sipping water with apple vinegar cider all day as it's supposed to be good for the liver, but I didn't buy the mother yet (that's an essential ingredient I am told, also available from Amazon).

The Alcohol Saga

Well, how did I do last night?

Not very well I am afraid.  I normally have two glasses of a measured vodka and cranberry juice most evenings, followed by a glass or two of white wine with dinner.  I did cut the vodka down to just one glass, so I guess that is a start.  I am working my way towards having alcohol free days.

I haven't been so stressed out today, so am hoping to cut down a bit further.  Maybe I should switch to red wine as I cannot drink more than a glass without expecting a headache the next morning.  I don't suffer from headaches, so know the red wine is responsible and have a glass possibly 4 times a year with a spaghetti bolognese in a restaurant.

It's The Time of Year to Cut Down on Alcohol??

Every year I ignore January and carry on drinking but in a more moderate way than over the festive period.

Today I peeped at the book by Clare Pooley entitled The Sober Diaries.  It seems the only way for regular drinkers to reduce their intake, is to give up altogether as the temptation of wine o'clock will take over on a stressful day, even after months of not drinking.
